Prewriting Organizers:
Make your own web if you want, with your topic in the center and 3-4 spider legs with each of your subtopics. These subtopics will be your body paragraphs of your essay. Then, extend 3 or more spider legs from each of your subtopics with support, examples, proof, or further explanation of your subtopics. Here's an example.

But, there are many other templates you can use. It doesn't really matter which one. The process of brainstorming your thoughts, organizing them into some sort of subtopics or groupings in some way before you start writing an essay, is the most important skill. This prewriting thinking and organizing will help focus your essay on one topic, and in the case of research, will help keep your research focused and actually save you time. Below are some prewriting organizers. Try a different one for each assignment and see which one works for you. (note: even though some are for specific essay types, they can often be slightly adapted to any essay) Don't ever start writing an essay off the top of your head. It never turns out good and ends up making more work for you, when you have to reorganize your thoughts.
